Special Olympic Gateshead: Our Sports

Special Olympics Gateshead Tyne & Wear provides weekly training in the following 10 sports:

  • Archery

    Wednesday morning at Winlaton Community Centre. This is a non-Special Olympics sport.

  • Athletics

    Thursday morning at Gateshead International Stadium (April to September) and Gateshead Leisure Centre (October–March)

  • Aquatics (Swimming)

    Monday afternoon at Gateshead Leisure Centre

  • Boccia

    Tuesday morning at Marquisway Resource Centre

  • MATP

    Tuesday afternoon at Marquisway Resource Centre

  • Cycling

    Thursday morning at Gateshead International Stadium

  • Football

    Thursday morning at Gateshead International Stadium (April to September) and Gateshead Leisure Centre (October – March)

  • Powerlifting

    Thursday morning at Gateshead Leisure Centre

  • Ten Pin Bowling

    Wednesday afternoon at Gateshead Metrocentre

  • Short Mat Bowls

    Friday at Marquisway Resource Centre

The sporting club also undertakes a Motor Activities Training Programme (MATP) programme for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities. MATP athletes are trained in sport specific activities each week, enabling people to develop their skills and confidence to then demonstrate their prowess in quarterly challenge days.
