Our Football team compete in the Community Cup in Belfast

Our football squad attended the George Best community cup in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on Wednesday 26th – 28th June 2019, an annual contest which always features a huge number of disability teams from across the British Isles. We took 2 teams of 6 players to the event with team 1 consisting of Phil Moat as captain with Mark Card, Robert Cockburn, Nathan Graham, Terry Jennings and Lee Marshall within the team. Team 2 consisted of captain, Paul Wilkinson with Gary Cringle, Robert Dickinson, Paul Gallagher, Mark Proctor and Dan Wood within the team.

The first day of the competition was a ‘banding’ day which would determine which league each of our teams would be placed into. Team 1 played 5 games and won all 5, being then placed in League 3 for the remainder of the competition. Team 2 won 3 games, drew 1 and lost 1 on the first day, resulting in them being placed into League 4 for the rest of the competition.

Within the league format, team 1 played 6 matches, winning 3, drawing 1 and losing 2 games. As a result, they narrowly missed out on a place in the semi-finals, with only the winning team of the league going through. Our Team 2 were dominant, winning 4, drawing 1 and losing 1 of their games. Consequently, they topped their league and progressed through to the semi-finals, where we came up against a strong Wrexham side who beat us 3-1.

Strong performances seem to characterise the performances of all of our football teams now – it takes a very good team to get past us. The attitude of our players remains of the highest level and this was a competition thoroughly enjoyed by all.
